In with the new

Hey there and happy weekend! Thank you all so much for your warm well-wishes for my Dad. I Face-timed with he and my Mom last night and he was LOVING his first official day of retirement. Their plans included a long walk in the morning, followed by a boat ride and a lobster dinner with friends. What a day! I’m so proud of him.
Anyway, I did some new-to-me things this past week and got some new things too, so I thought it might be fun to share : –)

First up, New hair: After 6 months, I finally took the plunge and got my hair colored in Australia. This was a huge deal for me because I have gotten my hair cut and foiled by the same hairdresser back home since I was 16 years old. That’s an 11-year relationship right there! To say I was scared to branch out and try a new one  (especially in a new country) was an understatement. I love the end result and finally feel like “me” again. Is it just me, or does a hair appointment make anyone else feel SO much better?!
Right after my appointment
New hair half-up for a night-out with the girls!

New breakfast: I’m an oatmeal lover, but I was getting tired of my apple-cinnamon oats combination. I decided to mix it up with frozen blueberries (because fresh are WAY to expensive to even justify buying here), and I’ve been loving the result. With cinnamon, almonds, raisins, and brown sugar mixed in, it reminds me of blueberry muffins. Yum!

New sneakers: At my job we’re required to wear all-black everything, including sneakers, which I didn’t have since I much prefer neon or bright-white colors over black any-day. I quickly picked up an inexpensive $10 pair at Target for my first few shifts and it was one of the worst decisions ever. At a job when you’re on your feet all day, good sneakers are so important.  Since I tend to develop chin splints quite easily, my feet, ankles, shins and knees were not happy with me for the last few weeks; I seriously felt pain all over! I quickly ordered these Nike Frees (5’s) and I’m loving the support they offer. Plus I think they’re pretty cute for black sneakers!

New dinner: I try to keep frozen shrimp on hand for simple meal ideas, and these worked great in a stir-fry dinner last week. I combined shrimp, cabbage, peppers, broccoli and water chestnuts with teriyaki sauce, garlic and some brown sugar, and served it over a bed of pad-thai noodles. This was a winning dinner!

New baking buddy: Brandon helps me prepare dinner quite often, but I usually bake by myself. However, this weekend  he joined me and I have to say, I really enjoyed the company! We made Funfetti cookies together (we’ve been hoarding the boxed mix from back home since Christmas…we’re slightly obsessed), and then I whipped up some homemade vanilla cupcakes, too. Such a fun weekend treat!

I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Did you try anything new last week?
Do you tend to go to the same hairstylist over and over again?
I just love mine and feel like I’m “cheating” on her if I go elsewhere!

What’s your favorite brand of running sneakers?
Lately, I’m loving my Nike’s, but I love Asics too!

  1. Your hair always looks great! I have had some really bad experiences with getting my hair cut- you cannot cut curly hair like you cut normal hair, and some hairdressers do not understand that!! I recently found a hairdresser and she does a great job– such a huge relief to not have to come out of the salon crying every time. :)

  2. You look beautiful. Anxious to see you when you get home. Maybe we can get you up on the lake with your mom and Dad!

  3. Love the hair — it looks gorgeous! I totally agree that getting your hair did makes a huge difference; if I go too long without a haircut, I start feeling all weird. (Aaah, the fun of being a girl.) :) Hope you had a lovely weekend!

  4. Your hair looks amazing and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that dress!! Where did you get it?! I need (ok, I don’t really need, but I want) new sneaks- I like those as I do love black sneakers:) Glad you had a nice weekend! xoxo

  5. Your new stylist gets an A+. Finding a new stylist is super nerve wracking but she did an awesome job! I love my saucony kinvaras. I haven’t had a major injury since I’ve been running in them so I will definitely not cheat on those!

  6. Do you tend to go to the same hairstylist over and over again?
Yes, I’ve been going to the same one for YEARS!! So, I totally understand. Love the new color – looks fantastic on you!

What’s your favorite brand of running sneakers?
Brook Ravennas Forever! Or until I find a new lighter brand that makes me even speedier. ;-)

  7. OMG I love your hair and your purple dress! So freaking pretty and wonderful and beautiful! I want my hair to look like yours. And Sharsti’s. And everyone with long beautiful blonde hair. Anyway, yay for new things! Love the Nike’s! I have some Nike Free’s and they are wonderful for me too! :) Glad you replaced the cheap-o Target ones. No good. That stir fry looks really good and stir fry is seriously the best thing ever to whip up quickly. Nice! :) I like to try different running shoes all over the place… I have yet to find one style/type to stick with.

  8. We definitely have the same taste in runners!!! :) I had an evening/weekend job as a server a few years ago in Calgary and they made us wear HEELS!!!! Worst ever. You are smart to get a decent pair of shoes for the job.

Your hair looks amazing. Why on earth can I not find a decent hair stylist here? I’ve been to 3 so far, and all have been disappointing (and very expensive).

  9. I love your hair! You look beautiful!! And I love that dress! actually i am pretty much obsessed with all photos- love the new kicks and all that food looks sooo yummy! looks like brandon is a great kitchen helper, it’s so awesome you guys cook together :)

  10. GAH you are sosoSOSOSOsososoSO adorable!! I just can’t get over it. I LOVE YOUR HAIR! It looks so soft and beautiful. So glad your experience with a new stylist went well. I too fear going somewhere new. AH I am going through a similar issue with shoes at my new job, and I finally asked if I could wear my funky toe shoes (they are ugly, but they feel SO good on my feet!) So fingers crossed I don’t have to come home with sore feet anymore!
